Listen to Your Body

Over the course of my life I have found it so common for women to beat themselves up mentally when it comes to their bodies and physical activity. Myself included. It is easy to compare ourselves to our former self, to a time when we were more active, or to others who are having a more active period in their life. Comparison is the thief of joy as the saying goes, and when it comes to being physically active and comparing yourself, it is no different.


Our bodies move in cycles liking everything else on the planet, sometimes they need movement, vigorous and challenging, and other times they need more soothing, relaxing and calming practises. It is important to listen to the cycles that your body is asking for, whether it be a 10km run or a quiet stretch session on the beach, the benefit to your body physically and mentally will only be obtained if you are doing what season is right for you.


I have always been the type of person that has needed the rush of adrenaline from extreme type sports, an hour long run, hike and bike ride all in the same day. Working out twice a day, morning and afternoon. Planning my life around working out so I had that rush to count on. More often then not the last few months, my body has been pushing back. It has been asking me for long walks instead, mellow bike rides and days of doing not much at all. My brain is constantly trying to tell me I need to move, but my body is winning out on this one. I have come to realize that like everything in life, my body is in a season of replenishment and recuperation, and adding stress by thinking of what I 'should' be doing is only making the process unenjoyable and stressful. Comparing myself to others who are in an active season is only causing me to speak to myself in ways that are not self loving or supportive, and definitely not what my body needs.


Love the season your body is in, give your body what it needs, and know that the best and most pro-active thing you can do for the health of your body and mind is to listen to the season it is asking to be in. You don't have to become a couch potato, but changing your routine to accommodate your energy is the most loving thing you can do for yourself.
